From piste to bar - 17/1/2012 08:47Lance Nelson of banskoblog.com reports on snow conditions from Bansko, January 17, 2012. Saturday and today saw some icy patches and exposed areas. Morning is best with the piste getting carved up by mid afternoon. It was cold too. Those with thin, cheap gloves were paying the price with hands colder than the snow around us.
I enjoyed a good night out with friends looking for live music. So we chose the Happy End live. The live band here delivered plenty of all time favourites as usual. Kempinski's Sing Sing piano bar was next. A more chilled atmosphere, a top trio singing the favourites. A relaxing way to round off a great day. Both venues are popular and reservation is advisable for the best tables. Both were surprisingly free of smoke. The Happy End more youthful and at higher volumes. But it is still very popular with DJ Shark doing a fine job to make the party. When in the Happy End it can be challenging to avert one's gaze away from the podium dancers. So I didn't. Here's a peek at one such lady, the mighty Malinka, dancing in the Happy End.
The mighty Malika. More snow set to fall in Bansko - 19/3/2011 13:59Lance Nelson of BanskoBlog reports on snow conditions from Bansko, March 19, 2011. Here's the latest live video report from the pistes of Bansko, courtesy of our reporter on the snow - Richard. More snow is set to fall in the Bansko area tonight, and this will see very good ski conditions persist through until at least next weekend. Temperatures will be lower too, with all pistes open except blue #10. The road is still fine for getting back down at the end of the day. Check out the live Bansko webcam here Perfect conditions in Bansko - 12/3/2011 18:29Lance Nelson of BanskoBlog reports on snow conditions from Bansko, March 11, 2011. A perfect day with superb pistes. Looking good for a few more days. Snow Monday - maybe rain lower down due to warmer air, so stay tuned for more. Thank you Mark - from the wonderful White Dot Freeride. I now have a live webcam here A World Cup weekend in Bansko - 27/2/2011 15:14Lance Nelson of BanskoBlog reports on snow conditions from Bansko, February 27, 2011. All the action from the Bansko leg of the FIS World Cup is over, and I had one of the best ski weekends ever. The organisation of the event was almost faultless and the attention to detail staggering - especially in a place where I used to wonder if anyone could organise a piss up in brewery! I felt Bansko had a lot to prove in hosting the FIS Audi World Cup Men's Slalom and Super G round, and they delivered. Whilst I have to confess to a few press pass concessions, I went out to experience the weekend like most other people here - relaxing with friends in the main stadium, soaking up of both the event and the sunshine. My own skiing even seemed to be enhanced by watching the pros show us how it should be done. Ski And Party Whilst I spent Saturday watching the racing and the lunchtime entertainment, on Sunday I was up early with friends to get some superb piste skiing on the corduroy pistes. On just one occasion I witnessed rocks coming through, but generally the conditions were excellent and the skies were clear. The event sponsors were out in force, most noticeably Milka and Carlsberg - with tons of free chocolate and beer on offer. A honourable mention must go to the giant beer bottle ice sculpture, which made for a great photo opportunity. The weather was great over the weekend, too. Saturday morning saw snow flurries which soon made way for plenty of sunshine, whilst Sunday was a perfect bluebird day throughout. Snow And Weather Forecast It's pretty cold at the moment, so the snow cover will largely be preserved and topped up by artificial snow from the cannons on Tuesday. More snow on Wednesday and Thursday will make for an excellent skiing and boarding weekend. It will be busy, though - this is a long weekend in Bulgaria and many more people from Sofia will be making their way to Bansko. With that in mind, make sure you get up early to be sure of avoiding queues. If only all buses that were used to ferry spectators up the mountain to watch the World Cup were used again, maybe the crowds could be more controlled better than in previous years... Weather improving in Bansko ahead of the FIS World Cup - 17/2/2011 14:17Lance Nelson of BanskoBlog reports on snow conditions from Bansko, February 17, 2011. Much better conditions in Bansko, as you can see. The weather forecast tells us things will be getting cooler with more snow expected next week. Which is great news, as the Men's World Cup Super Combined and Slalom event party kicks off on the 25th Feb, with race days on the 26th and 27th. The Men's World Cup is coming - 8/2/2011 13:06Lance Nelson of BanskoBlog reports on snow conditions from Bansko, February 8, 2011. The video says it all. Which is just as well for non-Bulgarian speakers. Our weather and snow forecasting from last week was, in general, about right. Well, yes and no it was right. We said it was going to get warm in Bansko, and Bulgaria in general - but this heat? In Winter? It was even warmer than expected. The spring-like weather continued over the weekend, after a period of good snow conditions. The next few days will see more rocky patches appearing. It's going to remain warm for a few more days, but by Thursday temperatures will drop back down below freezing at night time. By the evening of February 12 the snow will arrive - in a much colder air flow. The snow will keep on coming and February 15 will bring in some excellent powder conditions and many more smiles. But I think the white stuff could keep falling some more after then - and the low temperatures will drop even further on 16th. Is this the really proper dump we've been waiting for? Men's World Cup: Lucky Bansko The second course inspection by FIS (the International Ski Federation) will be on February 15 when they arrive to check the Tomba piste is in top condition for the Men's Slalom and the Men's Super Combined. So it looks like that, just in the nick of time, Bansko gets lucky and the World Cup arrives. The party will be big one. Loads better in Bansko - 28/1/2011 22:21Lance Nelson of BanskoBlog reports on snow conditions from Bansko, January 28, 2011. Conditions in Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo are loads better now, plenty of snow and cold temperature - and the prospects are excellent for the next two weeks. At last!! Here's Elga's snow video report. The snow came, and the Plato is open. The new Plato chair-lift, we are informed, will be open on Saturday. All good news. Over 30cm of snow cover on higher slopes and a temperature of -8ºC on Plato, around ZeroºC in town. Clear skies and bright sunshine. Most ski runs are now open. Better conditions in Bulgaria - 24/1/2011 08:38Lance Nelson of BanskoBlog reports on snow conditions from Bansko, January 23, 2011.
Skiing conditions were pretty good this morning - nice fresh powder... but still the upper part of the resort, the Plato, is shut. The recent snowfalls in Bansko have provided improved ski conditions. With many people put off coming to Bansko by the lack of snow, there were few lift lines to speak of and the sunny spells made for a fine day. More fresh snow overnight and tomorrow. Temperatures will be cold this coming week. This is good news, as the piste preparation for the Tomba Men's World Cup course for February 26 and 27 can continue. I think it is highly likely that the event will go ahead as planned. Restaurants: Have You Found Your Favourite For 2011? My revised Top 10 restaurants will be out soon. But in there will my recent favourites: ByTheWay (in the Lavina complex; classic Italian, excellent service, an upscale vibe), The Kempinski (especially the Sushi and Tempanyaki restaurant), St George's Palace (Italian and international dishes, stylish setting), Avalon Hotel (no smoking), Axemans (burgers and good service) and the Victoria (good value Italian dining, opposite the Kempinski). PS Extra snow came for Pamporovo and Borovets. The worst season in living memory? - 22/1/2011 19:41Lance Nelson of BanskoBlog reports on snow conditions from Bansko, January 16, 2011.
It is now fair to say this has been the worst season in living memory in Bansko. It is snowing as I type... but a lot more is required. This snow report is hot! And that's not just the warm sunshine you see here; nor the sprinkling of overnight snow. No lift queues, and glorious sunshine made for me a much better day in the mountains than it had right to be. Even though it's very far from perfect ski conditions, there were people, like us, out enjoying the sunshine.
After another great dinner at St George's Palace restaurant, and a fine local mehana pork steak at the Kulato in Bansko, it was nice to get out and blow the cobwebs away. There were some tricky icy patches. A few stones were to be avoided too. The plato is shut, less than half the runs are open, and half the lifts are shut. The World Cup is coming to Bansko in February and BanskoBlog is an official media partner. We will be bringing interviews and news from Bansko during the competition Improved snow conditions in Bansko - 12/1/2011 22:04Lance Nelson of banskoblog.com reports on snow conditions from Bansko, January 8, 2011. Today's uplifting snow report is from Ivan from Transfer in Bulgaria. The reality right now is a less joyous. Warmer temperatures for the rest of this week, rain in town on Wednesday in town...BUT some much needed snow on the higher slopes. Weather Forecast It's remaining a little too warm and the big dump of snow we were all hoping for has not materialised. It's looking like snow for several days mid next week, January 20, but it's too early to say for sure. However, throughout this snow-challenged time, there are plenty of people having loads of fun here - both on the snow and in the bars and restaurants. Tip Of The Day: Be careful when it's busy. There are still too many avoidable accidents keeping the snow patrols busy. Improve your technique, ski for longer and stay safe...and take some lessons! It's been snowing in Bansko - 6/1/2011 23:03Lance Nelson of banskoblog.com reports on snow conditions from Bansko, January 4, 2011. The snow is getting a little better but there's still some way to go. Getting a little warm but there was snow high up on Sunday and a big dump is due on Wednesday 12th. Still little snow, but Bansko is getting colder - 27/12/2010 13:22Lance Nelson of banskoblog.com reports on snow conditions from Bansko, December 27, 2010. Our video snow blog today comes from Sania at BanskoSkiMania, BanskoBlog's ski packages partner. Bansko snow conditions are looking better for today and for the next few days. The much-needed snow can be seen in all its glory in the video snow report. Everyone has been worried about the warm weather and general lack of the white stuff in Bansko, but frustrating times are coming to an end we all hope. Weather Forecast Looking ahead, temperatures will be generally below freezing as the current pressure system moves off and clear, sunny skies are likely. Although there are no signs of really massive dumps of snow, the good news after all this warm weather is that much colder temperatures are definitely on their way. In the meantime, the snow cannons will do their job and help deliver some respectable piste skiing and snowboarding this week. Piste Safety: Will You Avoid Injury? I still see a lack of awareness of piste etiquette, and gondola medics will be kept busy this week with patching up injuries - most of which are avoidable. Over-enthusiasm combined with the inevitable tiredness and lack of fitness of the first day's skiing of the season is an injury red flag, with collisions not uncommon. Add a healthy dose of last run of the day syndrome and - statistically speaking - you could be heading for harm. Please take it easy. Whilst I'm getting all boring, I still see that around 25% of skiers here have no ski insurance (inclusive lift pass insurance is not sufficient). It is essential to have adequate cover in case of the need for specialist repatriation. It's not expensive and it could save you and your family their life's savings. Lack of snow for season opening in Bansko - 12/12/2010 14:11Lance Nelson of banskoblog.com reports on snow conditions from Bansko, December 12, 2010.
The ski season began in earnest in Bansko yesterday with much ado about the snow. Or, rather, the lack thereof. Check out the action in the video report from yesterday. The planned grand opening of the 2010/11 season turned out to be a freezing cold yet sunny fiesta, held at Bunderishka Polyana ski area. The weather hasn't played out well recently - much to the disappointment of the event organisers - with spring temperatures melting what little snow cover there was just two days before the planned opening ceremony. Despite the best efforts and substantial firepower of the 15+ snow cannons that line Alberto Tomba slope (and temperatures of -17oC), the snow-making team wasn't able to produce the snow needed to run the Legends Parallel Slalom planned. Marc Girardelli, Luc Alphand, Michael Von Groeningen, Josef Strobl, Petar Popangelov, Maria Valizer and more former World Cup champions had all gathered in Bansko to mark the start of the new season and inaugurate the two new chairlifts that await hordes of thrill-hungry skiers and boarders.
Sadly, although the lifts were powered up there was just a 100m long snowy stripe to ride on with the official opening banner. A disappointing start. So, the season's up-and-running, but the real snow is yet to come. Forecasters say it will be Christmas before a substantial base finally forms on top of the mountain. If you're coming this way in the next couple of weeks, bring some warm clothes and a lot of patience. Stay tuned for more snow reports in the weeks to come. Reflections on the Bansko season - 10/4/2010 05:13Lance Nelson, who writes his own BanskoBlog, reports on the snow conditions in Bansko - April 8, 2010. > As the Bansko ski season comes to an end, the snow on Monday made for excellent skiing conditions higher up. With the lower temperatures it's looking reasonably ok for the last day of the ski season, which is on Sunday April 11. It's a fine time to be in Bansko with its end of season parties...and to get that final run in. And there's still snow. Overall I think that the season's been pretty good. Much of the negative side of people's Bansko experience has been directed at Ulen, the company that owns the resort. Their inability to manage the queues over the busy New Year period was inexcusable. A shortage of the white stuff didn't help them, but there are so many simple measures they could have used to alleviate the pressure. Then there was February 14 when the Greek holidays combined with the UK and many other European school holidays. It was simply awful. I took the pictures of the lift queues and left town. Ulen, you must know what you need to do - because everyone else does.
More snow in time for Easter - 29/3/2010 11:53Lance Nelson, who also writes his own BanskoBlog reports on the snow conditions in Bansko - March 28, 2010. The weather gave a spectacular display of changeability today. Saturday was a wonderfully warm Spring day, with sunshine so hot we put up the umbrella for shade. There was even sunbathing around the pool outside the Kempinski. The snow was melting but everyone was happy. It felt like summer (actually it was better than most days they call summer back home in the UK!) But then, in the early hours, the weather front came in and dumped a good 5cm of snow. Temperatures have fallen and there is perhaps as much as 10cm today at Todorka. More is due on Wednesday evening, which should ensure pretty good conditions for the holiday season. Temperatures will rise again but, with any luck, evening temperatures on the mountain will drop. The best skiing is likely to be in the mornings. Snow and sunshine in Bankso - 16/3/2010 12:14Lance Nelson, who also writes his own BanskoBlog reports on the snow conditions in Bansko - March 14, 2010. Happy smiles today. The Pirin mountains are in glorious bright sunshine and it's a wonderful Bansko ski day - sunny, cold and bright, and the plentiful snow stayed good all day. A virtually cloudless sky made the snow reflect like little crystals in the early morning sunshine. Some pistes were a little hard and the Tomba had a few icy patches. But generally very good for skiers, although not quite so enjoyable for snowboarding. New snow and tree skiing in Bansko - 9/3/2010 15:18Lance Nelson, who writes the BanskoBlog, reports on life in Bansko - MARCH 8, 2010. ![]() Bansko baby in the snow on March 8 More Bansko snow arrives with cold temperatures remaining for some fine powder conditions. The outlook is very good for at least the next five days for Pamporovo, Borovets and Bansko. We've had 20cm and another 20cm is expected over the next three days. Vaz guides us through the trees.
Locks, fire and mushrooms in Bansko - 28/2/2010 10:11Lance Nelson, who writes the BanskoBlog, reports on life in Bansko - February 27, 2010. Just got back from a wonderful morning of skiing. No major queues and weather looking good for next week. More snow on its way. Some high winds, but a nice layer of powder made for memorable first tracks. Sunshine has been predicted for Sunday, and on Monday and Tuesday there should be fresh snow on the mountain. Wednesday is holiday day in Bulgaria, with sunshine forcast - an excellent day to be in Bansko. Safety and security Some Bansko apartment owners have asked me about property security - especially how to change locks to guard against unauthorised lettings and unauthorised entry. This is something I recommend all owners take action on. For additional security I decided to change the internal locks of my own property, so I called Nigel.
The job was completed efficiently and fast. Changing inner locks, and only giving a key to someone you can completely rely on, is a sensible idea as it makes your apartment useless for unauthorised letting - even if someone copies your front door key. I urge every owner to research carefully who they entrust with their apartment keys before handing them over. Dishonesty is rife in Bansko. Nigel also explained that electrical systems should be checked for piece of mind. After hearing about the fire in an apartment in the Demianitza development caused by faulty wiring, he is finding more demand to install smoke alarms and fire extinguishers. Tip Of The Day Try Motikita ('The Hoe') mehana restaurant. It's 200m up from the Kempinski on left in the trees. The prices are fair and the starters are particularly good: cabbage salad, garlicky peppers, mushrooms etc. Fresh snow and my best Bansko lunch ever - 14/2/2010 20:31Today's BanskoBlog features the return of Ivanka - February 13, 2010. Generally overcast weather, but with good visibility and some sunny spells. Because of the fresh 20cm of snow, the mountain was busy with those wanting to make fresh tracks through the trees. However, The higher temperatures meant that the snow inevitably got a little cut up by 1pm. The snow cover is very good now, with the previous hard base only showing through on the balkanyada and tomba pistes. Unfortunately this warm weather has meant a lot of the snow in the town melting, making it really wet when walking around. The warm temperatures will remain so there will be a mix of rain and snow for the next three days. Don't expect to see much sunshine as the low pressure systems bringing warm moist air from the south create cloud cover. Looking ahead, the snow higher up will continue and probably Thursday we will see temperatures start to fall. Sitting outside the Peshterite restaurant, just off the snow road to Bansko, was just warm enough to enjoy the shopska salad, bob (bean soup), kebabche and chips with cheese. Probably my best Bansko lunch ever. It's absolutely fabulous today! - 10/2/2010 14:58Lance Nelson writes his BanskoBlog and reports on life in Bansko today - February 10, 2010. Lots of fresh new snow. Wonderful skiing in the morning. Breaking up a little with a very occasional icy base. Forecast: more snow. Mountain eating in Bansko - 3/2/2010 17:33Lance Nelson writes his BanskoBlog and reports on life in Bansko - January 31, 2010. Whilst I have to confess to finding the sustenance at the Goat restaurant up on the Plato area pretty acceptable. I go there for hot chicken soup, maybe chips, kebabche, moussaka, a pork dish - but balancing a Shumensko beer on my tray destroys the final food bill.
But there's another place on the mountain at Bansko, which reminds me of those fabulous Italian Dolomiti refuges. If you are done for the day, then the Peshterite is really simple to find. Cruise down the snow road which leads back to the main bottom gondola lift station. Then 200m AFTER the Chalin Valog turn-off, you will see two more signs beckoning you to a restaurant to your left. It's called Peshterite ('the caves'). This is where you can enjoy a really local experience. Like many of the best places in Bansko, you'll find ski instructors enjoying an affordable large cool Pirinsko beer and a Shopska salad, a chicken chop, an omelette and french fries. I have Dave to thank for this discovery. Peshterite is a family business and they were very welcoming. It's good value but I'm all too aware that prices change in an instant.
Snow conditions and forecast 20cm of fresh snow made for excellent skiing this morning and it is now snowing more. High winds shut Tadorka and Plato areas. More snow forecast for tonight. Temperatures will drop on Tuesday - making it great for the rest of the week. It is supposed to snow on Saturday. More snow coming to Bansko - 31/1/2010 22:29Lance Nelson writes his BanskoBlog and reports on life in Bansko - January 29, 2010. Conditions are good now with most runs open, but there are still some ice patches underneath the fresh snow. Borovets and Pamporovo have plenty of snow with excellent conditions reported in both today. Temperatures will climb, but more snow Sunday evening and Monday, with probably a further 30cm expected on Tuesday. With -7 C expected on Wednesday, we are hoping for some excellent powder skiing. Head to Head in Bansko - 28/1/2010 09:29Lance Nelson, who writes his own BanskoBlog, reports on life in Bansko - January 27, 2010. Fresh snow last night and more snow due friday, saturday and sunday... excellent conditions expected next week. Meanwhile, convinced I needed new ski boots, I started my research online and came to the conclusion I wanted a major brand name. I then checked with Nikola, BanskoBlog's snow blogger from the Bulgarian Ski Team. As I knew his father, Stampi, had just opened up a new Head Test Centre in the new Sport Hotel (right next to the Grand Arena Kempinski), I took a look in there and met a very helpful Alexander.
I spent a pleasant two hours discussing the different boots, wearing and walking around the shop in each one for at least 20 minutes. All the time I was absorbing boot tekkie information in the different models and ranges. I tried four ski boots in all - from the best-selling Edge and Ventor range to the the top-end Raptor models. After trying out several different models I had a final try of the RS90 boot. A similar boot to the Raptor but a few seasons old and there were a few left in the shop. My lucky day. They fitted perfectly and this boot has made skiing a whole lot more fun. Oggy, Oggy, Oggy, Oy, Oy, Oy! - 22/1/2010 10:38Lance Nelson, who also writes his own BanskoBlog reports on life in Bansko - January 21, 2010. It's snowing today and tomorrow we will see a really significant snowfall. Temperatures remain low, around minus 8 but they are even lower higher up the mountain. Sunday will be good day in the mountains and conditions will improve accordingly. Next week will be remaining cold. Today's snow report comes from Oggy and Oggy. I had just finished my early morning Head ski test session (video below) when I was introduced to Stampi and Vasco's friend, Oggy, who then bumped into his friend, also called Oggy. So we all went skiing together. As we went up the chair lift with the first Oggy, I have to admit thinking at the time, 'I hope these guys don't slow me down, the conditions are the best they've been for some time and I want to make the most of this'. The sun shone and there were those sparkling shiny crystals in the cold air... I love the mountains in winter! However, as they sped off into the distance at a speed that belied their years, I knew there was a story there. I should have guessed it. In their youth both were in the Bulgarian Ski Team. Soon, I was receiving helpful instruction from these guys, then an insistent swap of skis so that I could see what it feels like to be on genuine race-tuned, professional slalom skis. The video below shows my first runs of the day in new boots and Head skis, on groomed corduroy pistes. Big storm expected on Friday - 19/1/2010 13:15Lance Nelson, who also writes his own BanskoBlog reports on the snow conditions in Bansko - January 18, 2010.
There should be snow for all of Borovets, Pamporovo and Bansko over the next four days and Friday could be the big one here. This morning saw bright skies with clear views but cloud then partly engulfed the mountain tops. It looks like much needed snow will arrive tonight. Huge powder deposits have been eluding Bansko and Borovets - but there should be a little snow on Tuesday and Wednesday. I am not convinced there will be that much snow though - in spite of the Accuview forecast - but I'll go for Friday as the day. A really deep storm is not far away so fingers crossed. The weather charts have been changing and hopefully you'll forgive me if I get it wrong!
The temperature remains cold, with poor to fair conditions for intermediate skiers. There are also some icy areas which explains the many falls - the most I have seen so far this year. Stefan and I helped a Macedonian lady after she had a collision on piste number 10. The piste was icy and as hard as rock in places and as she wasn't wearing a helmet, I wasn't surprised that she was dazed enough to need to be taken off the mountain by the mountain rescue team. Run Number 5 is closed for a competition but being a Monday and low season, the queues are small. It's a good time to come to Bansko! Has winter arrived? - 16/1/2010 10:15Lance Nelson continues with his BanskoBlog on life in the Bulgarian resort - Friday, January 15. The Bansko weather forecast is for light snow flurries. There is a weak weather front over South Eastern Bulgaria but the main warm front will remain in Greece. This means snowfalls won't be huge today (Friday)and tomorrow (Saturday), but will continue to keep topping up the snow cover. I have been reading more and more other views on snow, global warming and, whilst it's clear glaciers have been retreating in the Alps, they have been doing their melting in the summer months. We have seen consistently big snowfalls in April, and there is the view that the season tends to start later but go on longer. Looking at recent clips of the fall of the Iron Curtain and the celebrations in Sofia 20 years ago, it looked incredibly cold. But are winter temperatures getting warmer, or just getting later? Who knows; but here?s the forecast for the next few days: Skies will clear in Bansko and Sunday will be bright, sunny and cold. A huge anti-cyclone system will bring cold air from the North (Siberia?) and it will remain very cold until at least Wednesday. All pretty good news for ski conditions for Bansko, while Borovet and Pamporovo are both loads better than they were. Full credit for the Bansko snowmaking and piste preparation for keeping the skiing going throughout this rather snowless December and first half of January. A couple of tips: Snow at last! - 13/1/2010 20:34At long last...Bansko's snow arrived last night! Once again Richard provides the report and photos for Lance Nelson's BanskoBlog straight from the slopes.
Bansko Blogger, Richard in an item from his hat collection. Snow conditions are much improved and the forecast is for snow tomorrow and Friday. The weekend is looking good and next week is as well. Finally the temperatures are lower too. There will possibly be some high winds on Saturday, and, with luck, the front will move up to provide some more snow on Sunday.
The ski road The Plato is open and the ski road back is as well, which you can see in the photo above. An innovation is the 6- and 13-day lift passes which are launching tomorrow; as well as discounted ski packs/ski/board hire soon after. These changes will go a long way to removing some of the first-day and arrival hassle, so stay tuned for more on this. Borovets and Pamporovo have a little catching up to do and the best skiing this weekend will be in Bansko. New snow in Bansko - 11/1/2010 11:41Today's BanskoBlog comes from Richard live from the slopes. He is a keen snowboarder, as well as skier, and has a penchant for the odd beer or three as well as some unusual head gear.
Bansko Blogger, Richard I got to the gondola at 8am. On my way it felt warm in town and all the snow had melted. The heavy rain in town last night suggested fresh snow at higher levels and, as you will see, I was not disappointed. The snow road looked in bad condition and I suspect will be barely useable by late afternoon. The lift queue was just to the 4th step down.
Bansko plateau, January 10 All lifts were opent at Bunderitsa, and from Platoto to Shilligarnika there was a fresh snow cover of about 2cm and a very light flurry of snow falling. The blue runs from Todorka down to Platoto were good, with deeper fresh snow, but some beginners were struggling on the exposed icy sections. The Tomba run was closed and staff were setting up safety netting in preparation for a downhill race. By 10am intermittent heavier snow began to fall.
Heavy snow on January 10 A little more snow is forecast for Wednesday and again on Thursday. Unfortunately though, it's not looking like we'll get the really cold air and deep weather system we need to get this ski season rescued from its poor start. As always this could change, but at least the trend is positive for snow later in the week. Meanwhile, Borovets is still limited for skiing and Pamporovo very restricted due to lack of snow. Icy pistes in Bansko (again) - 9/1/2010 11:36Lance Nelson, who writes his own BanskoBlog reports on the snow conditions in Bansko - January 9, 2010. It froze to ice in Bansko town and there was some ice on the paths when I strolled across to the gondola yesterday. But this slight drop in temperature helped keep ski conditions satisfactory for the first part of the day. The fog lifted a little but it remained generally cloudy. At 8.10am yesterday morning there was a long queue waiting for the gondola to start - the first skiers arrived by 7.50am to be on the first lifts up. Oh dear...and the queues today are just as large.
Lift queue at 8.10am, January 8, 2010 The alternative is to drive up to Buderitsa early in the morning - and this is a good option right now. I also recommend Chalin Valog area for beginners. The drag-lift there had shorter lines than Buderitsa, and the snow cover is sufficient. Snow and high winds in Bansko. - 6/1/2010 20:23Lance Nelson, who writes his own BanskoBlog reports on the snow conditions in Bansko - January 6, 2010.
There was some excellent skiing on fresh tracks this morning with some local hotshots exploring off-piste. The Plato lift was shut today and queues became a big issue with so many lifts closed. However as we skied down to Chalin Valog, the high winds were not a problem. And there was no queuing there until around 1pm. Run number 15 was a little icy, but the fresh snow has transformed this area...for today at least. It's so nice to see Bansko town in snow. Some warm and moist air is forecast, which will bring rain to the town tomorrow. How much this will damage the progress made today on the snow cover we'll have to wait and see. Higher up, the rain may fall as snow but it possibly won't be that pleasant tomorrow. Looking ahead at the weather charts, I see a cold front moving across the area on Saturday. This looks promising for good skiing on Sunday and for next week. Icy pistes in Bansko - 5/1/2010 14:29Lance Nelson, who writes his own BanskoBlog reports on the snow conditions in Bansko - January 5, 2010.
Gondola lift area and Ski Road snow-cannon Ivanka and I hit horrendous ice yesterday, after taking piste number six on the second chair up. We arrived at the gondola at 8.00am to avoid the huge queue which developed a bit later. The closing of the Tomba lift was a wise decision to avoid anyone injuring themselves. Queues up in the Shiligarnika and Buderitsa were up to forty minutes long. Later on we skied in stunning sunshine and sub-zero temperatures, on a hard-packed base of mainly artificial snow. There were still some exposed stones and, whilst we enjoyed it all, the skiing conditions were still pretty poor. The clear sunshine certainly helped to improve it all though! On the 'ski road' to the gondola yesterday there was hard-packed snow and even some ice, making it pretty dangerous for beginners. This, along with the busy pistes, made for some challenging conditions. It is best to avoid learning to ski or snowboard on days like these and, if you're not that confident then be very careful...or head straight for the Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room instead. The screach of an ambulance siren as I went out to the shopping mall was for just one of many injuries. If you're thinking of coming to Bansko, then one way of saving some cash is by booking direct from owner apartments. Prices are from eu10 per person per night. Almost all of them have saunas, Jacuzzi, massage, and many have swimming pools as well. Snow is forecast for today, along with higher temperatures. It will be very welcome, as a lot more snow is needed - the recent light dusting was just that. However, Bansko does still have the best conditions in Bulgaria at the moment, with Borovets and Pamporovo in a much worse state. New Year in Bansko - 2/1/2010 12:57Lance Nelson, who writes his own BanskoBlog reports on the snow conditions in Bansko - January 2, 2010.
Fireworks in Bansko On New Year's Eve we had a remarkably enjoyable day's skiing. Ivanka and I took the first gondola up and, with this early start, we found the best of the snow. However runs were very limited, the Plato lifts and runs were shut and the warm Foehn wind has really done its best to make this a very challenging time for the many thousands of skiers here right now. It's mainly artificial snow from the snow cannons, but the cover is thin, and there are some exposed stones to watch out for.
Ivanka on the piste. Whoever said Bulgarian ski fashion was boring? Finally there's more snow and the temperatures have been dropping today. Tomorrow and Monday will see more snow in Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo, which is much needed. Bansko has the best conditions of the three main resorts in Bulgaria at the moment and is busier than it was this time last year. With the lack of snow in Romanian resorts, there have been many more Romanians in town, as well as Bulgarians and Greeks.
Bansko is busier than it was this time last year Christmas in Bansko - 25/12/2009 18:56Lance Nelson, who writes his own BanskoBlog reports on the snow conditions in Bansko - December 25, 2009. If you weren't in Bansko for Christmas, you may be curious to learn what it was like. This report comes from Nasko and Nikolai who live in Plovdiv, currently having a family holiday in Bansko. "The town is full of people. Although it was very warm (7 degrees C) yesterday, we are happy Bansko did not see the sunny heat that the rest of the country saw on 24th. With all the sun in Sofia, there were streams of melting snow in the streets. On Bansko slopes however, conditions were pretty good for skiing - even in the afternoon. No queues and good snow skiing: but yet again grumbles from the insignificant discount for half-day cards and less than festive cheer from Ulen staff". However, things changed today. Although it was foggy, the snow was soft and it started raining in the afternoon. No wonder - the whole of Bulgaria saw record high temperatures. Snow, sun and snow time to lose - 22/12/2009 19:34Lance Nelson, who also writes his own BanskoBlog reports on the snow conditions in Bansko - December 21, 2009.
The weather in Bansko's pretty good - clear blue skies and more than 90cm of snow on upper runs with 70cm lower down the mountain. The current very cold weather should mean excellent Christmas skiing, although temperatures look as if they will rise. Most runs are open. No lift queues - and excellent snow conditions already reported. Borovets is now open and also has excellent snow cover. Like Bansko, Borovets should have good ski conditions for at least the next six days. Some more cloud on its way, but should still be very skiable and looking sunny for Thursday and Christmas Day.
Nick Chongorov, a member of the Bulgarian Ski Team, was also up on the slopes today with his trusty camera:
'Today was a great sunny day in Bansko. We had Super G training early in morning from 7.30am until 10am. The temperatures were around -12º C but later on in the day, when the sun started shining, it got warmer. The conditions were wonderful, because the clear weather during the night took out all the moisture from the snow and the ski trails were groomed perfectly in the evening. The forecast for the next couple of days is for warm weather, but this shouldn't be a problem since there was a lot of snowfall during the last week.'
Snow and more snow forecast - Bansko opens in style - 15/12/2009 18:40Lance Nelson, who writes his own BanskoBlog, reports on the snow conditions in Bansko - December 11, 2009.
The snow arrived in Bankso just in time for Saturday's opening ceremony. While we wait for the pistes to be fully groomed, the good news is that more snow is on its way. I must dash as I need to buy a helmet - why have I waited this long to buy one? I really don't know - what price one's head? But I just tried a Giro G9 and G10 and they fit like a glove. Can't recommend Giro G9 and G10 enough - they're well know amongst mountain biking and cycling enthusiasts. It's rumoured that Borovets may open on December 18, a day earlier than the official date. At the moment there is just a single drag lift open there. Vitosha and Pamporovo not open yet but have enjoyed good snow falls as well. Bansko gears up for official opening - 11/12/2009 18:30Lance Nelson, who writes his own BanskoBlog, reports on the snow conditions in Bansko - December 11, 2009. It's seemed a long wait, but now white stuff has arrived. The snow forecasts look good enough for skiing this weekend. Temperatures suddenly dropped and rain turned into snow on the highest peaks of the Pirin, Rila and Rhodopi mountains. The organizers at Ulen promise that the artificial snow cannons will be working at full blast to make sure there are appropriate ski conditions for the official opening ceremony on December 12. Bansko lift pass prices - the good, the bad and the downright eye-watering - 3/12/2009 11:52Lance Nelson, who writes his own BanskoBlog, reports on the snow conditions in Bansko - December 11, 2009. There is a little snow right now but more is due on Wednesday and Thursday. The temperature is dropping and, as Bansko is snow cannoned, we expect the official opening on December 12 will go ahead with a reasonable cover. A late start this year in Bulgaria.
Bansko lift pass prices this season remain the same as last year. Prices range from 40 leva (20.50eu) per day from April 1, 2010 to 55 leva (approx. 28eu) per day high season, with mid season (up to December 23, 2009 and between January 11 and March 31) costing 50 leva. For children up to 12 years old the mid season lift pass is 30 leva (25.60eu) per day. A season lift pass is a wallet emptying 860 leva (441eu approx) but if you plan for 17 days or more of Bansko skiing this season, investing in a season ticket makes sense - it saves time and hassle too. I still believe Bansko offers an excellent value destination, but time will tell if they have their lift pass pricing correct this season. I don't think Bansko has got a CLUE on how to promote itself - for families, these prices are too high. However there are a few discounts: For children up to 12-years-old there is 10% off on the lift pass when hiring Full Equipment Package and 15% off on the lift pass when hiring Full Equipment Package+Instructor. Mountain Insurance is also included. It's a competitive world and there are other Bulgaria resorts, such as Borovets, and all of them charge much less for a lift pass than Bansko. OK, none of then enjoy all the snow making machines, and modern lift system of Bansko, but some charge no more than 15 leva (7eu approx) a day. So after a good dump of snow, I'll be venturing into some of these smaller ski zones. The Bansko Blog - 25/11/2009 19:57Lance Nelson reports on the snow conditions in Bansko - November 25, 2009. He writes his own BanskoBlog in which, he says, "you'll find articles on the good, the bad and ugly of this mountain resort. Never a sales pitch - you'll read it how I see it. So poor service, rip-offs and unscrupulous activities are detailed here".
With continuing very high autumn temperatures of around 19 degrees centigrade in Bansko, I felt compelled to look ahead and see if I can put myself out of misery. Read on to see when it will all change, and for the mountains to be transformed to the perfect Bansko winter playground. Because of nearly 20 years' paragliding, I like to study the weather in detail. And there's one website I always go to first - it's Meteonet.nl. Generally speaking, for a really big snowfall I look for low pressure frontal systems coming in from a northerly direction. I've just done this today. I am afraid i'ts not good news. There are no major low pressure systems coming in for the next five days. There is a weak system passing over Bulgaria Saturday night - but I doubt it will bring very much precipitation (snow). After that, I would also guess for at least another two days there will be nothing - although temperatures look as if they may fall from their current high levels. So as far as I would dare forecast, which is about a week ahead, there is no sign of snow. A huge shame - the Alps will be getting even more snow as the huge weather systems dumping rain in the UK make their way south. So if you're from the UK, Ireland, Holland, Belgium etc - expect more strong winds and rain all the way through till Sunday. | ||
