Sausages and snow parks in Åre, Sweden - 20/3/2012 12:46

by The Are Blog

Helena Engelbrecht has been trying out the terrain park in Åre.

White-hot freestyle talent - and some tasty hot dogs, too...

The park area in Bräcke in Åre looks really good this year! Perfectly shaped jumps, a bigger half pipe than before and a large rail and box area. I?m a rookie in the park but still love to give it a try from time to time. Last weekend served up some awesome weather so I joined some of my jibbing friends for a few hours of jumping, falling and laughing. I had the biggest scare of the winter trying to rail a PVC pipe. Apparently I have a few more legs and arms than I knew of, I was all over the place. Still - fun to try!

Apart from hanging around in the park we grilled some sausages. I think we had sausage for three meals...

Love the sauerkraut, chorizo and mustard combo.

All you need is a CAR PARK - 1/3/2012 17:13

A new ski star is born!

I spent last weekend in Åre with a girlfriend who made her skiing debut. She was a bit older then Nelli though (see the blog, below); 30 + to be more exact. But that didn't make it any less of a big event, maybe even the opposite? At least heavier...

My friend Linda, in the middle of the picture, had never ever been close to a pair of alpine skis, not to mention the mountains of Åre. But she was a good sport and totally fearless.

We started off by pushing her around the car park, just to give her the feeling of the ski boots and the skis. Then we pushed her down the childrens slope in Tegefjäll. I'm really not a professional ski instructor as you might have noticed, and who knew how hard it could be to explain snow ploughing to a total rookie?

Well, after three laps in the beginners slope Linda declared that she was bored and we all headed up to Fjällvallen and the real slopes. She got a bit banged up but nothing worse than a few bruises. A sauna and a beer afterwords mended her well.

Christian and I got away from the teaching for a couple of hours and enjoyed 1000-metern at its best. I added some centimeters to my dropping skills and made my first little grab. We didn't manage to capture the the grab on camera, so I'm afraid you'll just have to take my word for it!

50cm of fresh snow in Åre - 15/2/2012 00:00

by The Are Blog

Linda Wasell reports from super-snowy Åre in Sweden - which is gearing up for the Red Bull Crashed Ice Championship on Saturday.

It's been snowing like crazy in Åre. In recent days we have really been blessed by the weather gods, and have had half a metre of powder! This means of course that the avalanche risk has increased significantly. The Ski Patrol has worked hard to secure the slopes in the morning - but the avalanche risk is currently 4/5. So despite the temptations of sunshine and fresh, fluffy powder, you have to be veeeeery careful where you ski. Click on this link to see yesterday's video of the snow.

Most people are overjoyed about the snow that has fallen. But there are some who are not quite as happy...in particular, everyone working on this weekend's big event: Red Bull Crashed Ice. Snow is not exactly what's required on a ice course! The other day competitors were training with born and bred freeskier Henrik Windstedt.

As for me - well, this weekend my daughter Nelli had her first ever skiing session. Yes, she's only 20 months old. But my little miniskier really loved to ski just like her big brother Colin. Skiing is really something for the whole family and it is wonderful to be able to be active together like this.

gear
Nelli's first taste of skiing. Go girl!!

Besides skiing with my family, I also had time eating out on a couple of Åre's wonderful restaurants with some good friends. A spicy ginger cocktail at Supper with tapas to start with and then scallops and Riesling at Vinbaren. Lovely!

gear
Yummmmmmmmmy.

A secret stash of powder in Åre - 1/2/2012 06:25

Somewhere in Åre...

I spent the last 72hrs driving to Åre from Stockholm, and back again. That's a lot of time at the whell. But what are you going to do when he need to ski?

We got to Åre Friday late in the evening, but were amongst the first to be on the VM8-lift when it opened at 8.00. After a few runs in the central slopes we headed down to Rödkullen and then on to the restaurant Buustamoon for some lunch. I had game stew... delicious!

Went back to Tege in the afternoon for some forest skiing. Same story on Sunday.

It had been snowing quite a bit the week before so we had some great runs around Vildmarksstigen and Fjällvallen. The pics are from some hidden locations in the Tege forest: but I'm not too keen on telling you where, exactly...

Save yourself for the morning - 27/1/2012 18:52

by The Are blog

Jens Arnstad is doing his first season in Åre - and has been bitten hard by the snowboarding bug. So much so that he's finding it hard to get into the resort's nightlife. January 27 2012.

The rock bar at Bygget.

Yesterday we were out, sampling the nightlife of Åre. We walked to Bygget, which is a nightclub with several bars - all offering different styles of music.

My favourite bar is the rock bar. I see myself as a song and dance man, but probably that's my delusion. I only dance when I'm alone, but then I'm good, really good...Well, this night it was crowded and there was good feeling, but I couldn't really relax because all I could think about was tomorrow's snowboarding.

Cold, clear days in Åre - 26/1/2012 09:42

by The Are blog

After a few days of temperature inversions, the weather is the right way up again in Åre: cold at the top, and not so cold at the bottom.

We have a lot of wind in up at Åreskutan today, forcing the lifts on Skutan to close. Even the long Ullådalslift and the Rödkullelifts are closed until further notice.

As soon as the wind calms down or change direction - we will open the lifts.

The past week we have been spoiled with beautiful sunny days in the valley and incredibly cool sunrises every morning - as you can see!

How to hurt yourself on a snowboard - 20/1/2012 19:48

by The Are blog

Jens Arnstad is doing his first season in Åre - and trying to keep up with his snowboarding friends. January 20 2012.

gear

Hello! Let me introduce myself. My name is Jens Arnstad, I'm 27 years old and doing my first season in Åre. I work at the hotel reception in Tegefjäll, which is part of Åre's ski area, and I'm riding snowboard for only my second year. I want to be a jibber dude, but believe me, I'm not!

Because I'm riding with some friends who are really good snowboarders, I always push my limits to keep up with them. I don't want to be the one that everybody waits for when it's time for a new run. The good thing about it is that I progress fast. The bad thing about it? I crash a lot. Since a got here in the end of November I've had one concussion and some blue knees. But hey, it´s worth it!

Fresh snow - and empty slopes. - 13/1/2012 11:55

by The Are blog

Linda Wassell reports on snow conditions in the Swedish resort of Åre, January 13 2012.

What a wonderful start of the day. After leaving the children in kindergarten and school, my future husband and I hurried out for couple of hours of glorious early-morning skiing.

Here in Åre, we've had about 30cm of fresh snow over the last 72 hours and everyone's walking round with big grins plastered across their faces (despite having to shovel the car out for the third morning in a row). What's more, the slopes served by the lift VM8 are now open from 8am. So early birds like me can ski before work! Lovely.

Another bonus is that you pretty much have the slopes to yourself at that time of the morning; which makes the early start very worthwhile.

Needless to say, the slopes were perfect today. Light powder lay on top of the corduroy, so it was like skiing on a cloud. When we took a short break for hot chocolate with whipped cream and a bun, it almost felt like I was on holiday.

I'm going to do the same tomorrow: skiing before the office is going to become a habit!

Click on this link for a short video of powder skiing in the trees, filmed yesterday.

Back on skis at last - 4/1/2012 17:56

by The Are blog

Helena Engelbrecht reports on snow conditions in the Swedish resort of Åre, January 4 2012.

The Fjallvallen sector of Åre on New Year's Eve. There's been more snow since this picture was taken.

I'm finally back on skis again. The opening day of the season was a bit later for me this time round, because I have a new job in Stockholm. But the good news is that I'll still be skiing in Åre every other weekend for the rest of the winter. That's on top of my current holiday: I've been here since Christmas, and so far both the snow and weather have been amazing!

In Sweden, winter came a bit later than normal (it's still green in Stockholm) but once the weather turned, the slopes went white and fluffy right away. Last week, it was snowing almost every day, except for New Year's Eve when we had bright blue skies.

The pics are from Tegefjäll and from Fjällvallen the last couple of days.
