What to wear

It's been coming for a while now - but this season we've passed the tipping point with ski fashion. You can forget camouflage, you can forget corduroy. You can definitely forget black. This is the season of colour and the more acid it is, the better.

The new Lofoten jacket-and-trouser combo by Norwegian manufacturer Norrona captures the new mood perfectly. So too the Volt jacket and Park pants from Bonfire at Ellis Brigham, pictured below. Officially the Bonfire gear is for snowboarders, but I can see a lot of skiers turning out in them this season too - especially as you can buy both for £205. The Norrona trousers alone will set you back £390....

The other trend in men's clothing is for great big blocks of geometric colour. Pictured below is a Westbeach Maverick jacket, which costs £150 from Snow+Rock, and the matching Upper Levels Pants for £110. As you can see from the before and after picture below - instant sunshine! Unbelievably this jacket is Westbeach's biggest seller so far this season. As with all jackets which use a lot of white, we wonder how it's going to look after someone's spilt gluwein over it...

Sorry almost everyone in this shots is a snowboarder, folks - that's just how the gear has been photographed this winter. Picture: Snow+Rock.

Sometimes the geometric blocks have been boiled down to checks and plaid. The best designs are staying bright and bold, however - such as the I Was Here jacket by Quicksilver (£200 from Ellis Brigham).

If all this bright colour is making your head spin - fear not. There are a few more sober outfits around. Some are clearly left-over ideas from previous seasons. A few manufacturers appear to be stuck fast in the year 2000. But a handful of jackets are low-key and different; for example, this conker brown jacket by Outdoor Research, pictured below, called the OR Alibi hybrid (£200) which is made in a combination of a tough, weatherproof fabric on the hood and shoulders, a soft shell on the lower body, and stretch fabric along the torso. Buy it at The Mountain Boot Company (0191 296 0212) or visit the Outdoor Research website for your nearest stockist.
