"if the cloud comes down you'll be skiing by sense of smell"

The Matterhorn, or Monte Cervino, as it's known on this side of the border. Over here, it looks less beautiful and more menacing - and is no less memorable for it.
The piste they call Red 7- five miles long, and dropping through 1500 vertical metres. On a sunny day, it's heaven.
Lunch at Ulla's.
The fact you can ski over into Zermatt for the day.
The Hermitage - a beautiful, secluded, luxury hotel, set away from the resort amidst the trees. A startling contrast to the rest of the resort.
The cheap package deals you can get here from the UK.
The price of private ski lessons - about half what you'll pay in an A-list French resort.
The Italians who come here. Most of them want to sit on deckchairs in the sunshine: which keeps the pistes empty for the rest of us.
The new super-cool nightclub, the White Rabbit - although it belongs in Verbier or Milan, not Cervinia.
The big investment this year in new lifts - four have been installed so far. One more is coming.
Chamois a picturesque, uncrowded resort just down the road.

The scrappy, haphazard architecture.
The lack of buzz at night.
The way the wind can scour this high mountain bowl, blowing all the snow away and leaving nothing but ice.
The lack of trees, for when it's cloudy.
The lack of steeper terrain.
The fact that so many tired, old hotels have lingered on for so long here.
